The best way to find motivation is to take messy action.

The best advice I received when starting my online business:

👉🏻 “Take messy action.”

When I was brand new to my business, I did not follow this advice quickly, because I was too busy obsessing about how perfectly executed each post on social media needed to be. I hardly had time to even consider taking additional action for my business because I was too busy obsessing over perfecting my social media presence. And I just  didn’t think taking messy action would ever really be a part of my brand.

But then I kept creating. I kept writing, filming, and growing online. I treated each and every post and presence on social media as a repetition I just needed to finish.

I gained more confidence in myself and what I had to say, and eventually found myself taking more risks. The more risks I took, forcing me outside of my comfort zone, the more I grew, and ultimately the more I wanted to keep growing.

So I started taking messy action.

I didn’t care if I had makeup on, I was filming. I didn’t care if I just finished a workout, I was filming. Was the lighting perfect? Never. But I did it. I filmed. I wrote. I posted. I moved on and created more. I took messy action. And the more action I took, the more I was inspired to create more, and refine more and in time I got really good at those things I was originally just “taking messy action” for.

Isn’t that funny?

So I’m a firm believer not only in action preceding motivation, but now I’m a proponent of taking messy action.

If you struggle to get started with a project, a workout, a hard conversation, throw out any expectations you have as to what you are about to do and take messy action. Start writing, put on your shoes, call your friend, take messy action. Sometimes the brain has to catch up with what the body knows is best.

Next time you are resisting the start of something new, remember, action precedes motivation and the quickest way to get there is to take messy action.
